My child tested into Spectrum. How do I enroll him/her in a Spectrum classroom?Return to Top


Newly eligible Spectrum-eligible students (or students who have moved and do not have a continuing assignment) are not automatically assigned to a Spectrum program. Families wishing to enroll their child into a Spectrum program must submit a school choice form indicating their preference for school location and program. School choice applications for the following school year are accepted beginning during Open Enrollment every spring.

5th grade students currently eligible for Spectrum will now automatically be enrolled in Spectrum when they enter middle school.

My child tested into APP. How do I enroll her/him in an APP classroom?Return to Top


Newly APP eligible students are not automatically enrolled in the APP program and need to fill out school choice forms, even if currently enrolled in a building that houses an APP program. There are two APP pathways, determined by your student’s address: 

APP @ Lincoln > Hamilton > Garfield

Thurgood Marshall > Washington > Garfield

NEW HIGH SCHOOL APP OPTION
A new optional APP/IB program was created at Ingraham High School in September 2011 for current 8th, 9th, and 10th grade APP students.
  
Students entering 9th or 10th grade with a guaranteed APP pathway assignment to Garfield may apply for the new APP program at Ingraham High School before or during Open Enrollment through September 30. If they applied before Open Enrollment, they will be assigned to APP at Ingraham.

If they apply during Open Enrollment, assignment depends on space available and tiebreakers.
They may also apply after Open Enrollment through September 30; assignment depends on space available. If students apply for this program and are not assigned, the initial assignment to Garfield will still be in effect (unless they apply for and are assigned to another school).

English Language Learner (ELL) services are provided at many schools throughout our District. Once your student's language needs are assessed, he/she will automatically be assigned to a school near your home that meets the student's needs. During the assessment process families will have the opportunity to discuss their student's assignment with an enrollment facilitator.

I have a child who will enter Kindergarten in September 2013.  What should I do?Return to Top


Early enrollment provides families an opportunity to get their school assignment and avoid the crowds of the busy spring and summer enrollment periods. All students who participate in early enrollment receive an initial assignment to their designated school.  If you wish to choose a different school for you student, you may do so during Open Enrollment in the Spring.

Kindergartners must be 5 years old on August 31 of the year they wish to enroll in school. Proof of birth date and other standard enrollment must be provided when enrolling in school. Families who wish to assess their children for possible early admission into Kindergarten can find more information here.

I have a child who is already enrolled in SPS.  How do I change her/his school assignment for next year?Return to Top


Our Student Assignment Plan provides opportunities for families to request which school they would like their student to attend. An “Open Enrollment” period occurs each spring for students to submit choice applications for the following school year. If there are more applicants than seats available for a particular school and grade, then certain tiebreakers are used to determine which students are selected. If there is not a seat available for an applicant, then that student is placed on a waiting list and contacted if space becomes available.

Students who do not apply during Open Enrollment may still submit a choice application after Open Enrollment through September 30. However, after Open Enrollment fewer seats are available for school choice.

After September 30, all waiting lists dissolve and school transfers are not permitted with few exceptions. (Exceptions may include a change of address, or if a student requires ELL or Special Education services that are not available at their current school.)

Open Enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year occured from February 25 - March 8, 2013.  School Choice Applications are still accepted through September 30, 2013.

What documents do I need to provide to enroll my student?Return to Top


All SPS students are required to submit an admission form which includes basic information such as name, date of birth, address, emergency contacts, etc.

A Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) is also required for all students.

The parent or legal guardian’s photo I.D., as well as two additional address verification documents must be provided for proof of residency. (Address verification must contain the parent/guardian name and be dated within the past eight weeks. Examples include current land-line telephone, utility or cable bills; mortgage statement; health or car insurance documents; paycheck stubs; official mail from public agencies, such as the court system or DSHS. Residential leases are accepted only if they are dated within the past eight weeks and are signed by both the landlord and the tenant.)  Follow-up address verification will be required in the case of a new lease and no other address verification documentation.

Students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, or 1st grade must provide a birth certificate or similar document for proof of age.

Students who have previously received Special Education services also need to submit a Special Education addendum.

Seattle Public Schools welcomes all of our families. Assistance is available to students who qualify under the Federal McKinney/Vento Homeless Assistance Act. If you are homeless, living in temporary or transitional housing, or are an unaccompanied youth, please let our staff know so we can help you through the enrollment process. If you are affiliated with an agency or case worker, please feel free to have them contact us on your behalf.

What is an “option” school, and how can I enroll my child in an option school?Return to Top


Option schools provide a variety of programmatic opportunities for families looking for alternatives to their attendance area schools. Option schools offer a variety of different curriculums and educational styles. Option schools do not have attendance boundaries or feeder patterns. Assignment is by application only, based on set tiebreakers. The application period for option schools begins every spring during Open Enrollment, and continues through September 30.  Students new to the District after September 30 may enroll in their attendance area (or designated) school or an option school with space available.

K-5 Option Schools: Thornton Creek Elementary, Queen Anne, STEM at Boren
K-8 Option Schools: Jane Addams, Orca, Pathfinder, Pinehurst, Salmon Bay, South Shore, TOPS

What is a geographic zone?Return to Top


The geographic zone tiebreaker is for applicants to an option school who live within a defined area in proximity to the school. Living within the geographic zone does not guarantee assignment to the requested option school, but rather gives a preference to students who live within the defined area. The geographic zone tiebreaker is only valid for applications received during Open Enrollment.

I've just moved into the Seattle School District, and my child has previously received Special Education services at our old school.  How do I enroll my child?Return to Top


If your student has previously received Special Education services in another school district, please complete a Special Education Addendum and include it with your other enrollment application materials. The addendum allows us to contact your child’s previous school district for records, and gives our Special Education team an opportunity to determine how to best serve your child’s needs.

After your student’s admission to SPS, a member of the Special Education team will contact you to discuss your child’s education.

What is an attendance area school?Return to Top


Elementary, middle, and high school students are assigned to a designated attendance area school based on where the student lives, as long as the school offers the services the student needs. Each attendance area school has a defined geographic boundary and is intended to serve the students who live within that geographic boundary.

What is a service area?Return to Top


Elementary school attendance areas are combined to create middle school attendance areas, resulting in geographically based feeder patterns as students move from elementary school to middle school. The middle school attendance area is also a service area within which various services are provided for students who live within the service area.

What is a feeder pattern?Return to Top


Multiple elementary school attendance areas “feed” into one middle school attendance area. That is, students from those elementary schools are assigned to the feeder pattern middle school upon transition to the 6th grade.

There are no feeder patterns from middle school to high school. Each attendance area high school has its own geographic attendance area.

What is a riser?Return to Top


A student “rises” to a new school when they have completed the highest grade available at their current school. Students in the 5th grade in elementary school “rise” to 6th grade in a middle school, and 8th-graders in middle school “rise” to 9th grade in high school.
